Course Content:  Introduction to the elements of proposition logic , techniques of Mathematical proof, and  fundamental structures including sets, functions, relations, and other topics as time permits. 

Prerequisite:   Math 3B .

 Section:  You must sign up for and attend a discussion section as well.  The section times and locations for this course   are as follows:

 Attendance and participation in a discussion section is mandatory for this course.  In section, your  T.A. will answer         questions, review the homework, and cover additional examples.

 Textbook - " Introduction to Mathematical Structures and Proofs" by   Larry J.Gerstein, Springer-Verlag 1996.  

 
Homework -  Homework exercises will be assigned in lecture and listed in the  table of  schedule.   Homework assignments will be due once a week in section, usually on Thursdays.  You may work together on  homework problems; however, you must write up your answers individually.  You must fully justify your answers in order to receive  full credit.  Late homework will not be accepted.  However, your lowest homework score will be automatically dropped.

 Exams - There will be two in-class midterms, and one final exam. The schedule of exams is as follows:
 
                                Midterm  I        Wednesday,  Oct.  21th,  10:00-10:50 a.m.
                                Midterm II        Friday,          Nov. 13th,  10:00-10:50 a.m.
                                Final exam         Tuesday,      Dec.  8th,    8:00-11:00 a.m.
 
No makeup exam is given for any missed exam, except in extraordinary circumstances. If you have a serious conflict with any of these exams or miss one for any reason, it is your responsibility to notify me immediately so that other arrangements may be made

Quizzes -   Quizzes  will be given in discussion sessions.

Grading
- The final grade for this class will be computed from your exam scores and homework scores,  weighted   by the following amounts:

                                       Homework                   25%
                                       Quizzes                         15%
                                       Midterm  I                     15%
                                       Midterm  II                    15%
                                       Final exam                     30%

 
Math Lab - The math department offers free walk-in tutoring and extra help through the math lab. It is located in South Hall 1607, open Monday through Friday, 12:00 - 5:00 p.m.
