Textbook. Contemporary Abstract Algebra, 5th ed., by J. Gallian (Houghton Mifflin)

Description. (4 units) Intended primarily for prospective teachers. Introduction to group theory. Permutation groups, cyclic groups, theory of finite groups, group homomorphisms, and abelian groups. Applications to number theory and geometry.

Prerequisite. Transition to higher mathematics (Math 8)

Grading. Your grade will be determined by homework scores (including some quizzes, possibly, and participation in class), two exams, and a comprehensive final exam. The final is Monday June 9th from 4-7pm. The other exam dates are tentative. The weights of each of these are as follows.

Make-ups. Make-ups for exams and quizzes will only be given with documented University-approved excuses (see University Regulations).
