The Time Element

This is a long problem set. We give it to you well in advance of the due date and urge you to work on it as far in advance of this date as possible. A great idea is to do the problems on the set which correspond to material you have read or which has been covered in lecture immediately after you have done the reading or the lecture is over. The point of putting all the problems out there now is so that you can manage your own time as finals approach. However, there is plenty of rope here with which to hang yourself. If you do not get to work on these problems soon and start them near the due date, this will interfere with preparing for your finals and you will be lost re this material on Monday, March 17.

Webwork Type Answers Are Not Enough

Please remember to read the problems in the text and be able to do them in that form. Webwork then lets you know if you were right. There may be several ways to do these problems and the web will not know how you did them. However, if instructed to use a particular method on the exam and you use another method, serious points will be deducted even if your solution is correct. The point of a problem which specifies a particular solution method is to test your understanding of the method.

Similarly, when the text says to find the series, this should be done. Webwork asks only for so many terms as a check on whether you found the right series. On the final, we are more likely to require formulas for all the coefficients. Etc.

Similar advice has been given regarding earlier sets, and remains valid. We wanted refresh our advice in this regard.

 The Handwritten Problems

Similar advice applies to this problem set. The due date is set late so that you can have as many as possible of your previous handwrittens back before the due date. However, you should begin work on this as soon as you understand what is being asked and then refine it at the end. There is one problem from the past you can begin immediately. If you leave this assignment until the last moment, it will interfere with preparing for your finals. Remember to explain what your are doing: if you are multiplying power series or substituting in them, etc., explain this in words.
