TEXT AND MATERIAL COVERED:

Differential Equations, with Boundary-Value Problems, by D. G. Zill and M.R. Cullen, sixth edition, Thompson, Brooks and Cole 2005, and notes, Elementary PDEs, Fourier Series and Numerical Methods Björn Birnir, 1998. These notes will be available from the Alternative Copy Shop, 6556 Pardall Rd. Isla Vista, three weeks into the quarter (when we start talking about PDEs and Fourier series).

PREREQUISITES:

HOMEWORK:

Homework is 10% of the grade, it will be assigned every class and should be turned in and collected in class. It will be graded and is due one week after it is assigned, after two weeks it is late and will not earn a credit although it will be corrected (assuming that the grader has enough time).

GRADE:

There will be one midterm and a final. The midterm is worth 40% and the final 50%. On a scale of 100, your final numerical grade will be given by

\begin{displaymath}
G = \frac{H + 4 M + 5 F}{10}
\end{displaymath}

where H is homework, M is midterm and F is final.

INFORMATION:

Information about the class will be posted on the webpage:www.math.ucsb.edu/~birnir, under the heading: The Applied Math. Project and the class number Math 5C.
