Information for Math 119A, Fall 2002
CLASS: INSTRUCTOR: Office hours: TEXT AND MATERIAL COVERED:

Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, L. Perko, second edition, Springer, New York, 1996.

We will (partially or completely) cover Chapters 1-2, in 119A and Chapters 3-4, in 119B. In addition notes will be handed out in class.

PREREQUISITES:

Math 5A or equivalent.

HOMEWORK:

Homework will be assigned every class from the book. You should do as much of it as you can and turn it in. It will be accepted up to two weeks after it is assigned. The homework is not a part of the grade unless you do poorly on either the midterm or the final. Then it kicks in as a security deposit. Those who do consistently well on the homework but do poorly on either the midterm or the final can still get a good grade. The homework will be handed back in class.

GRADE:

On a scale of 100, your final numerical grade will be given by G=(2M+3F)/5, where M=midterm, and F=final. The numerical weights (2/5,3/5) depend to some extend on the total class average, and may be changed. If the grade on either the midterm or the final is below average the homework is taken into account.

INFORMATION:

Information about the class will be posted on the webpage:www.math.ucsb.edu/~birnir, under the heading: The Applied Math. Project and the class number Math 119A and the year
2002.

DATE, TIME AND PLACE OF THE FINAL:

Thursday Des. 12, 4-7 p.m., ARTS 1247.
