Abstract: A (2+1) topological quantum field theory (TQFT) is a symmetric tensor functor from the category of closed surfaces and 3-cobodisms to the category of finite dimensional vector spaces and linear maps. Turaev-Viro TQFTs were constructed in 1990s based on spherical fusion categories that are certain semisimple categories. I will discuss the generalization of TV-invariants for 3-manifolds based on non-semisimple Hopf algebras and the lattice model realizations of TV-TQFTs based on certain unitary
quantum groupoids.
