Hypatian Seminar: 'How to build a website workshop'

Event Date:

Monday, October 8, 2012 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Event Location:

  • 6635 South Hall

Good morning!

This Monday we in Hypatian Seminar will begin a two week seminar on how to
prepare your website!  This is important to start now (first year, second
year, wherever you are.)

We will discuss
-how to create your website,
-what kinds of features you can include,
-how to make your webpage user friendly,
-how to upload it to the math server (i.e. let everyone see it), and
-how to do this as quickly and easily as possible.
Part of the seminar will be workshop so that you have time to create
something.  We hope that by the end of this Monday everyone will have a
basic template for their website declaring “Hello world!” that they can
add onto in the following week.

Next Monday (the 15th), we will have an open workshop.  Several
website-savy grad students and Marcel, our tech ninja, will be around to
help.

Please bring a laptop, a picture or image you would like to have on your
website, and a FREE text editor -not word.  If you don’t already have one
of these, it would be helpful for you to download one of the following:

Mac: Aquamacs  http://aquamacs.org/download.shtml,

Windows: Scite http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html,
Emacs http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/

Linux: Emacs (This requires an initial commitment of learning.  If you
have Linux you probably know how to download and install)
http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/

Sincerely,
K. Grace Kennedy and Laura Zirbel
